YOUTH ACTION SHOWCASE (YAS)
What is the Youth Action Showcase?
The Youth Action Showcase is one of Youth Ottawa's signature events, showcasing the inspiring actions youth have taken on social and environmental issues.
There are many youth engagement opportunities, but too often these events ask youth to sit down and listen only. What we love most about the Youth Action Showcase is that it flips this script. Adults go to youth, and youth tell adults about the amazing work they've done!
Attended by Mayor Jim Watson, members of Ottawa City Council, other elected officials and community leaders from a range of sectors, this event is best described as a cross between a speed-dating event and a science fair (bear with us...), but for connecting social and environmental youth action projects with community leaders.
Youth are given a table in Jean Pigott Place - the hall outside of Ottawa City Council Chambers. They are encouraged to prepare visual materials to describe their projects, and then community leaders circulate from table to table, listening to youth and offering encouragement, networking contacts, and finding “next step” opportunities.
Who can participate?
We invite classes that have participated in our high school civics programs ( DILA and JIVA), as well as any youth groups from across Ottawa who have taken action on civic issues which matter to them.
How does the Youth Action Showcase work?
The event has 2 parts: the Gallery Walk and the Focus Meetings.
During the Gallery Walk, amazing volunteer community leaders (City Councillors and those who work with organizations across the city) mingle through the hall, talking with youth groups and getting to know their projects.
The Focus Meetings see community leaders paired up with youth groups for 15 minute sessions to witness, give advice, and discuss next steps on youth initiated-projects which match with their areas of expertise.
